Position Summary:

Preference for candidates who have the Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification.


Under the direct supervision of the Coding Educator, assign preliminary codes for inpatient hospital discharges and outpatient day surgery and Observation records for the purpose of reimbursement, research and compliance with federal regulation. Coder trainee will assign diagnosis, and procedure codes using the current ICD classification system and CPT Coding system. The purpose of the Coder Trainee program is to provide a directly supervised coding practice environment for coders to train for successful certification as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS). Coder Trainee, upon successful completion of the CCS certification may advance to a Coder II position. Coder must be meeting department productivity and accuracy standards. Coder II Trainee position allows up to 2 years to complete. If trainee fails to obtain CCS certification and/or or to meet productivity standards within two years, the employee would need to seek employment in another position. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. No Patient care assignment.
Accountability:
  • CODE - Identify and assign preliminary codes for hospital discharge records and outpatient records for the purpose of reimbursement, research and compliance with federal regulations according to diagnosis(es), operation(s), and procedure(s) using the current version of ICD, CPT, and DRG classification systems

  • CODE - Abstracts statistical data for discharge records using hospital's abstracting system

  • CODE - Performs data entry for determining correct diagnoses, DRGs, procedures, and CPT codes

  • RELATED WORK - Perform related duties and responsibilities as required

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent

  • Medical Terminology Experience

  • Licensure/Certification Requirements:
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) w/in 2 years

  • Education Requirements - Preferred:
  • Associate's Degree in related discipline

  • Student coding pgm to CCS or HIM pgm to RHIT

  • Completion of coding courses through HIT program or online equivalent

  • Experience Requirements - Preferred:
  • 1 year directly related experience

  • Physical Demands Requirements:
