Questions or Comments?

If you have a question or comment about our Quality and Safety website, please email Dr. Munk, Executive Medical Director, Quality and Patient Safety at: HShinn@salud.unm.edu

The University of New Mexico Hospitals (UNMH) serves as the state's only academic medical center, its only Level I Trauma center, and its only certified stroke center. It is also the first choice, and primary source of medical care for thousands of New Mexicans.

At UNMH, we take our commitment to ensuring high-quality healthcare seriously.

This site is designed to show how we are doing as a hospital. In some areas, we are national leaders in patient safety and quality. In other areas, we still have some work to do. Here you will find data on our performance, and some of the steps that we have taken to ensure safe patient care.

We are committed to transparency, and an open discussion of how we are serving the community. We hope that you find these pages informative, and that they help you make better healthcare decisions.

What is an Academic Hospital?

At UNMH, you'll benefit from the unique resources of the state's only academic medical center.

An academic hospital is one where the clinical staff, including doctors and nurses, not only take care of patients but also teach a new generation of caregivers. Our Staff are leaders in research and medical discoveries, and are at the forefront of innovations in medical care.

At UNMH your caregiver wears many hats. In addition to being a clinician, dedicated to treating you, he or she also spends time teaching doctors and nurses in training.

One of the benefits of getting care at an academic hospital is that our doctors are experts in a wide variety of sub specialized care. Our clinicians are experts in multiple specialty areas of medicine. For example, UNMH has neurologists who specialize in pediatric patients, and others who are stroke experts. We have surgeons who are trauma specialists, vascular specialists, cardiothoracic specialists and so on. The scope of knowledge, depth of expertise, breadth of scientific inquiry and availability of specialized medical equipment is unmatched by any other hospital in the state.

What is Quality in Health Care?

The Institute of Medicine defines high-quality healthcare as that which is:
Safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable.

At UNMH, we strive to ensure that the care we provide exceeds these measures. We are national leaders in several of these core missions, particularly our performance in the areas of efficiency and equity.
