Payment Responsibilities

Before Admission

Before your admission, a representative will ask you to provide your insurance information and any pertinent demographic information. We will also require payment for the part of your hospital service or physician bills not covered by your insurance plan. This may include co-payments, deductibles and /or co-insurance amounts.

Estimates

The amount collected at your visit may be based on estimated charges. The amount due will depend on your insurance benefits or financial assistance program. Please remember that you will be responsible for any balance due after your insurance has paid.

The actual cost of the care provided varies from one patient to another because every patient receives medical care that is individualized to best meet each patients needs. Your admission or procedure may take more or less time than expected dependent on the circumstances.

We bill for the actual cost of medical care, which may include other fees and costs in addition to those stated in the original estimated amount. Estimates are based on current pricing at the time the estimate is provided. Your final bill will reflect the actual cost of care that was provided to you.

When to Pay

It is our policy to collect co-pays, deductibles, and down-payments amounts due before services are provided. For non-emergency visits or admissions, your treatment may be denied or delayed if your financial obligation is not met before the service date. Please remember that UNM Hospitals has financial assistance programs as well as payment plans to help you with your health care expenses.

After Your Visit

UNM Hospitals will file your insurance claim, as a courtesy for you, directly to your primary payer and, if appropriate, your secondary insurance payer. Any payments and/or outstanding balances not paid by your insurance payer will be billed to you directly. If your insurance payer does not respond within 60 days of receipt of the claim, we may notify you and ask that you contact your insurance payer on our behalf.

If you are unable to pay your balance in full, we do offer payment plans. Please contact 272-2521 to set up you payment plan.
