Welcome to the Pain Center

Chronic pain can often come to rule our lives. It limits our activities and our enjoyment of family and friends. It may interfere with work and sleep and sex. Chronic pain can alter our postures and habits—the way we play, walk, sit, and sleep. Pain also changes the internal chemistry of our bodies' some of the same chemistry that makes us depressed, fearful, anxious or angry.

Unfortunately, chronic pain is rarely fixed completely with pills or procedures. Depending on its cause, pain may never entirely go away, but we, the staff of the UNM Pain Consultation and Treatment Center (PCTC) are dedicated to try to make it better, to improve the quality of our patients’ lives.

Who We Are / What We Do

The UNM PCTC is a statewide referral center for chronic pain patients. We have been designated as an American Pain Society Clinical Center of Excellence in 2011 and a Center of Excellence in Pain Education by the National Institutes of Health.

All patients seen in our clinic will be evaluated by a team of practitioners who represent the disciplines listed under Pain Center Specialities. We will do our best to work with you to determine the best treatment plan for your condition.

In order to be evaluated for care in our center, we require a referral from your primary practitioner (Referral). We will keep your practitioner informed about our recommendations for your care, including prescriptions for medications that need to be prescribed by your provider. We do not prescribe medications in our clinic.

Because we see patients from all over New Mexico, we are very busy, and our time, like yours, is valuable. We understand that you may have to wait awhile before your records are reviewed and you are first seen in our center. Prior to your visit, we ask that you fill out the following form that will give us a better idea about your pain and how it affects your life.

If you need to cancel your first visit or any follow-up appointments, we strongly advise you to call us beforehand---at least 3 days before a first visit, and 24 hours before a follow-up visit.
