Nurse Extern Program

The Extern Program accepts students who are in good standing in a nationally accredited nursing program that have completed the basic nursing skills course at an accredited nursing program and the first semester of an acute care clinical course. The participants provide basic patient care, perform routine treatment procedures and assist in the maintenance of a safe, clean environment. They must adhere to UNM Hospital's and Departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignments may include neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups.


Nurse Intern Program

Senior level students who are in good standing in a nationally accredited nursing program, have completed a basic nursing skills course and a first semester acute care clinical course, are enrolled in the UNM College of Nursing N-429 Nurse Intern Professional Role Development course, and meet the criteria for acceptance into the Intern Program are eligible to apply. All nursing duties are performed under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. Students work within the nursing process to provide direct nursing care to assigned patients. They serve as a role model to promote a positive work environment and quality patient care. They must adhere to UNM Hospital's and Departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignments may include neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups.


Nurse Intern Program Frequently Asked Questions

When can I work as an intern?
A preceptor must be identified on hire. The student must work only the preceptor's schedule for the first semester and be supervised by that preceptor throughout the program. The intern may work other shifts than the preceptor after evaluation and approval by the preceptor and faculty.

How do I apply for a position as an intern?

What is the intern class like?
The class is one credits, or 16 hours over the semester. Seminars will concentrate on the professional role, specifically professional communication and other topics of interest identified by the interns. There are no tests or papers required. The grade comes entirely from participation and meeting professional standards. Attendance is therefore required.
