Neurosciences ICU

The Neurosciences ICU (NSICU) is a brand new, state of the art, 24 bed unit and has been a specialty unit since 1999. We are a proud part of UNMH Level I Trauma Center and teaching hospital, which accepts patients from the entire state of New Mexico.

NSICU nurses provide comprehensive and expert care to critically ill patients with a variety of neurological, neurosurgical, and neurovascular conditions which range from treatment of seizure disorders and strokes to the critical management of Level I traumatic brain injury and aneurysms. NSICU actively participates in innovative research projects, applies evidence based practice to our delivery of care, and uses the latest technological modalities for monitoring and guiding therapeutic interventions. A multidisciplinary approach to family centered care helps ensure quality outcomes for our patients.

Our highly individualized orientation includes clinical time with an assigned preceptor and structured educational components such as AACNs Essentials of Critical Care Orientation (ECCO). A computerized human simulation lab provides additional learning opportunities. In addition, the Clinical Education department offers many courses including both Basic and Advanced Neuroscience Nursing Courses.

We have a strong team oriented culture, are enthusiastic about our present growth, and look forward to our future in advancing neuroscience patient care.
