Neuroscience (5-South)
The 5-South Neuroscience Unit consists of 32 beds which includes12 semi-private rooms, 2 private rooms, and a 6 patient ward. The unit provides care for various services, diagnoses, and also provides 4 different levels of care: Medical/Surgical, Sub Acute Care (Stepdown), Epilepsy Monitoring, as well as a 6 bed high-risk for fall and close observation room. Care is provided to patients diagnosed with seizures, stroke, head injury, brain surgery and other various diagnoses related to neuroscience. Seizure patients are monitored via a 24-hour video-EEG with electrodes placed on the scalp. The recording of electrical brain activity allows the physicians to diagnose and treat the patient appropriately. Because seizure patients are considered high-risk for a fall, the proximity of a close observation room allows immediate patient and staff interaction for intervention of limiting falls. The unit is staffed in a team-based approach with a nurse and a nursing assistant working together for delivery of care. Currently, the unit is in the early stages of implementing Family Centered Care which will include the patient's family as clients and participants of care for their loved ones.
