Center for Diabetes Education

The Center for Diabetes Education is a component of the Patient Education Department, 505-272-2340.  The Center for Diabetes Education is recognized by the American Association for Diabetes Education as meeting the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education.

The Center for Diabetes Education is comprised of Certified Diabetes Educators (CDEs) who are nurses and dietitians that are part of the Diabetes Disease Management Team.  ¬†We offer a variety of services to assist your patient in achieving glycemic control.


Services include instruction in:

  • Diabetes Self-Management performed in individual appointments
  • Diabetes Self-Management Education Class Series
  • Carbohydrate Counting
  • Self Monitoring of Blood Glucose
  • Insulin Self-Administration
  • Sick Day Management
  • Insulin Pump Education
  • Medication Management
  • Preconception Counseling

Other Involvement

In addition to providing the above services, the Center for Diabetes Education is also involved with providing diabetes education to outlying clinics and assisting providers.  The department also participates in education with the Cardiac Rehab program, Clinical Education for hospital staff, and education with nursing and medical students and dietetic interns.

Community outreach is also important. Our CDEs have participated in American Diabetes Association Diabetes Camp, New Mexico Takes on Diabetes committee, New Mexico Zia Association of Diabetes Educators, and the New Mexico Diabetes Advisory Council.
