The Service League was founded in September 1972 for the purpose of providing volunteer support to the hospitals and enhancing it's health care mission to the community. In addition to thousands of hours of volunteer services in many areas of University of New Mexico Hospitals they have made financial contributions of over $2,000,000 in various areas of the hospital.
The Service League operates UNM Hospital's Gift Shop, Espresso Caf and Espresso Cart. Various fund raising events are held, including the annual Holiday Bazaar and bake sale. Proceeds earned are given back to the hospital and community.
Service League Members believe strongly in life long learning and higher education. They provide financial support through Annual Healthcare Scholarships and Employee Book Awards. This funding provides financial support to college level students in the healthcare fields. Qualified UNMH Employees are assisted with book awards twice a year.
Several programs are sponsored by the Service League through the Volunteer Services Department at UNM Hospital. The HaHa Cart, acronym for Hospitals And Humor Are Healthy Allies uses humor and the human touch to help brighten the day of adult patients, faculty and staff at UNM Hospital. The cart is filled with magazines, back scratchers, playing cards and other fun gifts. The Milagro Program provides shelter and support for soon to be mothers and their children. The Service League has supported the Milagro Program through mother/baby showers, holiday dinners and purchase of various furniture items. Cuddlers are utilized in the Newborn Intensive Care Units of Children's Hospital of NM. This program utilizes trained volunteers to rock and cuddle the tiniest patients of the hospital. Pediatric Oncology patients are rewarded with trophies purchased by the Service League. These trophies are given to the pediatric oncology patients as they reach milestones in their treatments. Someone Cares program brings together volunteers at home, with Children's Hospital patients. This program utilizes volunteers "giving hearts and willing hands" as they knit, crochet, and sew baby items for Children's Hospital of NM. These items are given to the smallest patients to be used while they are being cared for in the hospital and eventually to be taken home with them. When you join the Service League, you become a part of all of these programs. You will help the Service League Help Others.
