Your PSR Experience

PSR is a classroom based recovery program which offers services for individuals with mental health diagnosis as well as substance abuse. Clients are usually referred by a provider or a treatment team. Prospective clients complete a Recovery Readiness Assessment and Orientation in order to identify their strength and barriers to achieving their goals. Next, they establish treatment goals and choose from among many skills classes offered at PSR. Skill classes are offered 6 hours a day, five days a week. Every client has individualized schedule based on treatment plan and established goals.

Classes

The classes help clients to achieve their goals by addressing pre-employment/ educational skills, effective methods of socialization, and independent life skills.

Some classes assist clients in understanding their diagnosis, teach symptoms management strategies. For example:

Addiction Recovery: You will learn about addictions and how to recover. The class will include the award winning videos on addiction narrated by Bill Moyers.

Anger: Yes, anger is healthy and normal. Come learn about your anger, what are the limits of healthy anger are and how to develop new skills for managing your anger.

Coping with Depression: Learn the skills you need to cope with symptoms of depression

DTR (Double Trouble in Recovery): Learn how to recover from substance abuse when you have a mental illness.

Understanding Your Diagnosis: Learn about mental illness from a medical perspective. Learn to communicate with your doctor about your medication.

Understanding Schizophrenia: Learn about the symptoms of your illness, and the skills, supports and strategies for recovery.

Developing or improving coping skills is another important aspect of the recovery process. Therefore PSR clients may benefit from the following classes:

Stress Reduction: Learn the difference between good and bad stress. Enhance your experience with the kind of stress that pushed you to excel.

Organizational skills: Learn how to get control of your time, your home, and your budget.

Men's Issues: A class to discuss issues that often come up in men's lives and ways to deal with them.

Women's issues: Women can learn problem solving and relationship skill in a supportive group.

Power Plan: Provides weekly opportunities for evaluation of progress toward recovery goals.

WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan): Learn the skills needed to maintain your wellness.

PSR also offers classes concentrated around/on the socialization aspect of recovery including:

Social Skills: Improve your social and emotional skills to make your relationships work.

Community Access: Explore what your community has to offer.

Current Events: How might current events affect your recovery? Joint this exciting new class and learn more about current events.

Games for Socialization: Join us and have fun while practicing social skills, getting to know your peers, and making friends.

Community Meetings: We all participate in a community meeting for announcements, activity planning, and discussion of issues in PSR Community. Community meetings are held weekly.

Wellness: Learn to eat right, exercise your mind and body and truly live healthy.

Cardio and Walking: Learn tools for healthy lifestyle changes.

Fitness: Join us in search for fitness to improve our health and reduce stress.

Weight Training: Improve your strength and wellness, learn new workout routines.

Tai Chi: Finding the emotional and spiritual balance within you.

A variety of PSR's classes encourage client's artistic expression including:

Art: Join us to explore your own art interests and express yourself through drawing and painting. Class will include outings to shop for supplies, view art in community and draw outdoors.

Ceramics: Explore your creativity with clay

Crafts and Gifts: Learn to make jewelry, cards, and other crafts that make great gifts.

Fabric Arts: Are you interested in creating? Then come and create a work of art with fabrics - bring your unfinished fabric projects or create your own using our supplies.

Film and Video:An introduction to the techniques of successful film and video makers, and hands-on practice with video.

Writing - Our Stories: Learn to use your experiences to liven up your writing with creative non-fiction and fiction stories.

Music: Learn how music can help you relax, motivate yourself, and connect to your community.

Practical skills course offered by PSR include following:

Baking: Learn how to bake all those wonderful treats, such as: bread, rolls, cookies, pies and more…

Cooking: Learn basic cooking skills, nutrition and cooking on a budget

Computer Basics: Come and learn how to use a computer and erase any fear associated with computer use.

Computer skills: If you have no knowledge or a little experience with computers, you can learn more and increase your skills.

Computer typing: Learn to type using the Mavis Beacon Typing Tutorial.

Internet computer: This class will teach you how to log on the internet and to explore the vast knowledge it holds. Learn how to research and find information on variety of subjects.

PSR Cares: Join us in learning skills for volunteer work at PSR and in the community.

Peer Bridgers

This consumer-run program offers a peer support for fellow consumers. Peer bridgers help to facilitate a client's recovery by encouraging development of meaningful sense of self, apart from their psychiatric condition. Our program assists individuals with focusing on self advocacy, self empowerment, and self care, which are necessary for a productive life. Peer bridgers have personal experience and expertise to provide participants with mentorship to support their connections to essential community resources. Some of the resources include services at University of New Mexico Psychiatric Center, as well as other options for support groups and community resources.

Caminante Employment Services

When a client decides that employment is the next step in their recovery process, Caminante employment services can help them achieve that goal. A referral can be made by the client's facilitator, health professional or case manager. The program can assist clients with writing a resume, finding prospective employment opportunities, job coaching, employment placement, benefit counseling and providing ongoing support for the client and the employer.
