UNM Psychiatric Center Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR)
For individuals with serious and persistent psychiatric disabilities, PSR programs and
interventions function from a recovery-based philosophy to achieve goals relating to
social competency and personal independence. Community readjustment is facilitated
by way of social learning and behavioral change through experiential activities.
The focus is on normalizing roles and relationships, which can include preparing for and
finding meaningful employment or related productive activities. Consumers learn to
assume responsibility for decisions affecting as many aspects as possible of their daily
routines, with the result of feeling respected and valued individuals.
The PSR Experience
Referrals to PSR begin with the initial Rehabilitation Readiness Assessment
process. With this tool, each individual's specific needs relating to PSR
can be determined. S/he will also have the opportunity at this phase to learn about
hat PSR has to offer, and to decide upon what is of personal interest.
Upon completion of the initial assessment, consumers establish treatment goals and
choose from among numerous Skills Classes offered at PSR that will
support achievement of their goals. These classes address, for example, development
of pre-employment/educational skills, effective methods of socialization, and independent
life skills.
Individual PSR (IPSR) is available for specific training that is
necessary to provide on a one-on-one basis, such as transportation access, academic
preparation, and budgeting. IPSR services are usually performed "in vivo", at
locations in the community or the home, wherever applicable.
If a consumer is determined by the referral source to be immediately ready for pursuing
employment, s/he can be directly referred to UNM Caminante Employment Services
for that specific purpose. In addition to job placement, this aspect of PSR
provides on-the-job training assistance, benefits counseling, transportation assistance,
and ongoing support to consumers as well as employers. In the event that the consumer
desires access to both Caminante and Skills Classes, the Rehabilitation Readiness Assessment
will be necessary.
Based at the PSR program, this team of consumers provides many services to their peers.
These include peer-to-peer supports, resource development and availability, and community
outreach. Several members of this team are graduates of PSR, although that is not
necessarily a specific qualification.
