UNM Psychiatric Center Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES)
Emergency Psychiatry Services is a 24-hour a day service provided by the Psychiatric Center for psychiatric emergencies, primarily for the residents of Bernalillo County and surrounding counties. Services include:
Diagnostic psychiatric evaluations for the presence of a mental illness, including those on Certificate of Evaluations.
If necessary, admission to inpatient facility.
Crisis intervention related to a psychiatric illness
Medication management for crisis stabilization and for limited follow-up care.
Referrals may be given for medical, dental, legal, social, or substance abuse services.
Services not included:
Evaluations for the patients of private practitioners, psychiatrists, social workers, counselors (second opinion), termination of care of a difficult patient (fired patient). The patient will be referred back to the primary therapist until an orderly transfer of care takes place.
Primary Clinicians will be responsible for all medications and management of all emergencies regarding their patient's care until care is transferred
Care is generally transferred to General Clinic appointments.
Care is generally transferred to Programs for Children for ages 7 through 18
Care is generally transferred to University of New Mexico Child Psychiatric Center for children up to age 8.
Psychiatric Emergency Services does not make competency evaluations, Social Security disability evaluations, nor provide evaluations for the clients of lawyers who have Social Security disability practices.
Certificates of Evaluations issued by private practitioners will not be evaluated.
