Pediatric Orthopaedics
Patrick P. Bosch, M. D. joined the Carrie Tingley Hospital team as a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon as
of January 31, 2004. Dr. Bosch has completed specialty training in pediatric orthopaedics and spinal deformity at the
Texas Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas, Texas and the Starship Children's Hospital in Auckland, New Zealand. He
completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, including a research fellowship
related to the molecular biology of bone healing. Dr. Bosch received his Bachelor of Arts from the John Hopkins
University in Baltimore, Maryland and his Medical Doctorate from the University of Iowa, in his hometown of Iowa City Iowa.
Paul G. Echols, MD Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Chief of the Division of General Orthopaedic
Surgery at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. Dr. Echols was named Interim Medical Director in August
2007 for Carrie Tingley Hospital. Dr. Echols received his MD from the University of Texas in Galveston. He is
Board Certified with the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Echols area of clinical expertise is General
Orthopaedic Surgery.
Dale Hoekstra, MD joined the UNM School of Medicine Department of Orthopaedics, Carrie Tingley Hospital
in December 2007. Dr. Hoekstra received his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit;
completed his internship and residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at William Beaumont Hospital in Michigan. Dr. Hoekstra is
an experienced and excellent Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon. He served as the Director of the Spinal Deformity Clinic at
Henry Ford Hospital for over a decade, and brings additional recent experience from a busy and successful practice in the
private sector.
Candace Leas, CFNP joined the CTH Inpatient staff in April of 2007. She graduated from the University
of Maryland with her BSN and received a MS in nursing from the University of Texas. She spend 22 years in the US Army
as a RN and upon retirement from the service, went to work at Lovelace, first the ICU and the as a Nurse Practitioner after
receiving her Family Nurse Practitioner Certificate at Texas Tech. She worked in Family Practice for seven years and
then spent 2 years as a Hospitalist before coming to Carrie Tingley.
Julia J. North, P.A.-C
Elizabeth A. Szalay, M.D. is an Associate Professor of the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center,
Carrie Tingley Hospital. Dr. Szalay received her Orthopaedic training at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center
at San Antonio, Texas and her pediatric orthopaedic and scoliosis fellowship training at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, Dallas,
Texas. She is Board Certified through the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Szalay is an active member of
the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, Ruth Jackson Society, Alamo Orthopaedic Society, New Mexico Medical Society
as well as the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Szalay's research interests are in Legg- Perthes and Club
Foot. She is active in teaching the orthopaedic residents as they rotate through Carrie Tingley Hospital.
Andrew J. Veitch, M.D.is an Assistant Professor for the Division of Sports Medicine and Assistant Team
Physician for the UNM Lobos. Andrew completed his residency program in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of New
Mexico (UNM) and his Sports Medicine fellowship was completed at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). His
areas of interest are injuries of the knee and shoulder.
Pediatric Upper Extremity
Tahseen Cheema, M.D. is an Associate Professor at the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation in
the Division of Hand and microsurgery at the University of New Mexico. He received his Medical Degree at Nishtar Medical
College, Multan, Pakistan in 1973 and completed residency training in Orthopaedics at the College of Medicines and Dentistry
in New Jersey. He completed a fellowship in hand and microsurgery at Rush Presbyterian-St. Lukes medical Center in
Chicago and is board certified in Orthopaedic Surgery. His special interests and expertise are hand and Microsurgery,
reconstructive hand surgery, thumb reconstruction and congenital hand anomalies.
Elizabeth A. Mikola, M.D. is an Assistant Professor, Division of hand Surgery in the Department of
Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at the University of New Mexico. She received her medical degree from the University of
Missouri, Kansas City School of Medicine. She completed her residency in Orthopaedic surgery with the University of Texas
Health Science Center, Houston and her hand surgery fellowship with the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center.
Dr. Mikola is ABOS eligible in Orthopaedic surgery. Her clinical expertise is Orthopaedic hand surgery and her research
interests are flexor tendon repair and distal radius fracture treatment.
Moheb S. Moneim, M.D. is the Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and
Rehabilitation at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. He is also the Chief of the Division of Hand
Surgery. He is a board examiner in Orthopaedic and Hand Surgery and is a member of many professional organizations
including the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. His expertise covers all disorders of the hand including
congenital and neuromuscular disorders in children. He received his MD Degree from Cairo University in 1963 and completed
residency training in Orthopaedic Surgery at Duke University Medical Center. He earned a fellowship in Hand Surgery at
the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City and is board certified for Orthopaedic and Hand Surgery. His special
interests and expertise are Congenital Deformities, Trauma, Arthritis, Microsurgery, Replantation and Peripheral Nerve Surgery.
Limb Inequality
Thomas A. DeCoster, M.D. is a Professor with the Division of Sports Medicine and Chief, Division of
Orthopaedic Trauma with the Department of Orthpaedics and Rehabilitation. He received his medical degree at the
University of Missouri. He completed his residency at in Orthopaedics at the University of Vermont and Fellowship in
Trauma/Sports Medicine at the University of Iowa. Dr. DeCoster is board certified in Orthopaedic Surgery.
Pediatric Rehabilitation
Margaret Armstong, M.D. is Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and has been at Carrie Tingley Hospital since
1988. She has experience in helping children with cerebral palsy, spina bifida, traumatic brain injury and other chronic
disabling conditions. Her interests include continence issues and neuro-behavioral issues and rehab for children with
disabilities. She is board certified in Pediatrics and a member of the American Society of Neurorehabilitation. She
received her medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, served an internship at Baylor Hospitals in
Houston and completed her residency in Pediatrics at the Children's Medical Center, Dallas. Dr. Armstrong practiced in
Dallas and at the Isleta Public Health Services Clinic before coming to Carrie Tingley Hospital.
Mark H. Pedrotty, Ph.D. is a Sr. Clinical Psychologist at Carrie Tingley Hospital. He received his
Ph.D. from Loyola University, Chicago in 1993. Dr. Pedrotty was a member of the faculty at the University of Texas Health
Science Center at San Antonio. He was Research Program Director at Brooke Army Medical Center Child and Adolescent
Psychology Service with outpatient care and a full range of psychological services. At Carrie Tingley he provides inpatient
and outpatient consultation, psychotherapy and assessments. He is a member of the American Psychological Association and
other similar organizations including the Southwestern Group Psychotherapy Society.
Susan Root, M.D. received her medical degree from the University of Texas A&M College of Medicine in 1988
and completed her residency training in Pediatrics and Preventive Medicine at the University of Utah Medical School. She
completed a Fellowship in Genetics at the University of Utah, and is Board Certified in Pediatrics. Dr. Root is an
Assistant Professor at the University of New Mexico Department of Pediatrics and holds Dysmorphology and metabolic clinics at
both the Children's Hospital Pediatric Clinic and Carrie Tingley Hospital. Her special interest and expertise is in
Pediatric Dysmorphology and Metabolic Diseases.
Denise Taylor, M.D. is Chief, Division of Pediatric Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine in the Department
of Pediatrics and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Orthopaedics. She received her Medical Doctorate at the
University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1989 and completed residency training at Tulane University School of
Medicine in New Orleans, Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine in New York and Albert Einstein/Montefiore Medical Center
in New York. Her Fellowship was completed in 1994 at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Dr.
Taylor is Board Certified with the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. She has most recently served
as Pediatric Physiatrist for Blythedale Children's Hospital in Valhalla, New York. Dr. Taylor is a member of the American
Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the New York Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the American
Academy of Pediatrics.
Pediatric Neurology
Jennifer A. Vickers, M.D. received her MD Degree from the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center
in 1989 and completed residency training in Neurology at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. She is
board eligible in Neurology. Dr. Vickers is an instructor at the University of New Mexico Department of Neurology.
Her special interests and expertise are Neurology, Developmental Disabilities and Neonatal Seizures.
Pediatric Surgery
David Lemon, M.D. is Assistant Professor at the University of New Mexico Department of Pediatrics and
Chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery. Dr. Lemon received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the
University of Washington, graduating in 1983. He completed his general surgery residency at Brown University Integrated
Surgical Program in 1989. He then completed his Pediatric Surgery Fellowship at Babies Hospital/Columbia Presbyterian
Medical Center in New York, 1989-1991. Dr. Lemon was in private practice in Albuquerque from 1991 to 1999 after which
he joined the UNM School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatric Surgery.
Pediatric Gastroenterology
Jeffrey Cox Fahl, M.D. is an Associate Professor at the University of New Mexico Department of
Pediatrics. He received his MD Degree from Hahnemann Medical College in Pennsylvania in 1978 and completed Residency
training in Pediatrics at Hahnemann Hospital. He earned a Fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology at Children's
Hospital of Philadelphia and is Board Certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Gastroenterology.
Lucille McLoughlin, M.D.
Edward Rose, M.D. is an Associate Professor at the University of New Mexico Department of Pediatrics and
chief of the Division of Gastroenterology. Dr. Rose received his MD Degree from the University of New Mexico Health
Sciences Center 1982 and completed his residency training in Pediatrics at the University of New Mexico Children's Hospital.
He earned a Fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology and is Board Certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Gastroenterology.
His special interests and expertise are Pediatric Gastroenterology, Endoscopy and Nutrition.
Pediatric Endocrinology
Nancy Gay Greger, M.D. is a staff physician at the University of New Mexico Department of Pediatrics.
Dr. Gregor received her MD Degree from Northwestern University in 1978 and completed her residency training in
Pediatrics at Baylor College. She completed her Fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology in 1984.
Susan Scott, M.D. is a Professor at the University of New Mexico Department of Pediatrics and Chief of
the Division of Oncology. Dr. Scott received her MD Degree from Loyo University-Stritch School of Medicine in 1975
and completed residency training in Pediatrics at Louis Children's Hospital. She earned Fellowship in Neonatology and
Pediatric Endocrinology and is Board Certified in Pediatrics, Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine and Pediatric Endocrinology.
Her special interest and expertise is Neonatal Endocrine Disorders.
Pediatric Rheumatology
Arthur D. Bankhurst, M.D. received his MD Degree from Case Western Reserve University and completed
his residency training in Internal Medicine at University Hospitals of Cleveland, Ohio. He earned a Fellowship in
Rheumatology and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology. Dr. Bankhurst is a Professor at the
University of New Mexico School of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Rheumatology. His special interests and
expertise is Osteoporosis, Arthritis and Rheumatic Disease.
Courtney R. Johnson, M.D. is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and is the only Board Certified
Pediatric Rheumatologist. Dr. Johnson received his MD Degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis
in 1976 and completed Residency training in Pediatrics at St. Louis Children's Hospital 1976-1978 and St. Louis City Hospital
1982-1983. He completed a Fellowship in immunology research at the Jewish Hospital of St. Louis, Washington University
SOM and Adult and Pediatric Rheumatology at St. Louis University School of Medicine 1983-1986.
Pediatric Specialty Clinics
Andrew C. Hsi, M.D. is board certified in Pediatrics and is locally and nationally recognized for treating
high-risk infants. He graduated from the UC-San Diego School of Medicine while simultaneously earning his Master's
degree in Public Health from the Univesity of Washington. Dr. Hsi completed his residency training in Pediatrics at the
UNM School of Medicine. He has been a member of the faculty for 13 years and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics.
He directs the Division of General Pediatrics.
Pediatric Pain Management Clinic
Eileen D. Yager, MD is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at UNM since 1995. Previously she was in the
Department of Pediatrics at UCLA, where she was on the founding faculty of the UCLA Pediatric Pain Center (1990). At
UNM she is the Director of the Pediatric and Adolescent Pain Management Clinic and Pediatric GI Pain Management Clinic which
meet at Carrie Tingley Hospital. She is also the Director of Bright Tomorrows Behavior Clinic which meets at UNMH. Dr.
Yager is Board Certified in Pediatrics since1973 and did her pediatric residency at Bronx Municipal Hospital Center. She
took both a General Pediatrics fellowship and a Medical Education fellowship at UCLA. She currently teaches pediatric
and psychiatry residents in her clinics.
Dental
Kim Espinosa, D.D.S. is an Assistant Professor with the University of New Mexico School of Medicine.
She completed her residency in Advanced Education in General Dentistry at the University of New Mexico School of
Medicine. Dr. Espinoza graduated from the University of Southern California School of Dentistry in 2004. She
is interested in Dental Public Health and achieving optimal oral health for New Mexico's children and adults living with
developmental disabilities.
