UNM Children's Psychiatric Center Patient Services
When children and families encounter difficulties, often the most helpful
treatment includes a variety of services. Every child and family is unique
and special. The treatment should be just as unique. We offer:
- Doctor assessment
- Medication evaluation and treatment.
- Nursing care.
- Specialized therapy, including individual, family and group.
- Therapeutic recreation.
- Milieu (cottage specific) programming
- Mimbres School
- Discharge planning
Multidisciplinary Treatment Team:
- Our programs are based on the belief that there are two types of behaviors,
those that result in positive outcomes for the child and those that result in
negative outcomes for the child. Children learn from both positive and
negative outcomes. Children, their families, and CPC work together to
design a treatment program specific to the child's strengths and needs.
- The multidisciplinary treatment team consists of the child, family, doctor,
therapist, nurse, teacher, case manager and mental health tech.
- This team identifies how they will know when treatment is done. These
are known as treatment goals.
- The team sets up mile markers along the way, which demonstrate that the child
is reaching the treatment goals. These are known as treatment objectives.
- Finally, the team discusses how to reach the mile markers and the treatment
goals. These are known as interventions. Interventions may consist of
a variety of services that CPC offers, but most importantly they use the child's
and family's desires and strengths to reach the goals.
- The treatment team meets on a regular basis to discuss the child's progress
in meeting goals and objectives. They identify whether the interventions
have been helpful and should be continued, or recommend changes to the
interventions.
Milieu Program:
Children earn points daily for behaviors, which help them achieve their
treatment goals, and don't earn points for behaviors that keep them from achieving
their treatment goals. These points are totaled daily and determine the
child's level for the day. Each of the three levels has privileges
associated with it. The level system provides concrete outcomes for
behaviors, which children can see and understand.
School:
Children at CPC attend the Mimbres school. Mimbres school is on the
CPC campus. It is an accredited state-supported school, which provides
general education as well as special education services year round. Credits
and grades obtained from Mimbres School can be transferred back to your child's
home school upon discharge.
After Care Services:
Most children benefit from some type of treatment following their hospital
stay. Your insurance company requires that we begin discharge planning
when your child is admitted to the hospital. The therapist, physician and
case manager work closely with you to decide what services will best meet your
child's needs following hospitalization. Your child's case manager will
tell you about which agencies offer each of the services. We will ask you
for a signed release of information for each agency, so we may seek services for
your child following hospitalization. Your insurance company requires that
we send requests for services within 72 hours of your child's admission to the
hospital.
Average Length of Stay:
We are committed to helping your child meet their treatment goals and return
to their regular routine as quickly as possible. Usually, children only
stay in CPC programs for a brief time.
- Acute: 7-14 days
- Residential Treatment: 30-60 days
- Partial Hospital: 30 days
Levels of Care:
There are a variety of services offered by agencies in New Mexico. Each
service is known as a level of care. CPC offers some, but not all of these
levels of care.
Acute Care - Acute care is designed to stabilize acute
psychiatric conditions such as self-harming behaviors, harming or threatening to
harm others, or psychotic symptoms which place the child in danger of harm to
self or others. The average length of stay in acute care is 7-14 days.
Residential Treatment Care (RTC) - RTC is an around-the-clock
behavioral treatment program, including therapy and structured programs for
children who are not able to maintain safe behaviors at home, but do not require
the same level of medical intensity as acute care. The average length of
stay in RTC is 30-60 days.
Treatment Foster Care (TFC) - TFC is not the same as foster care.
Children are not removed from your custody. Highly trained and supervised parents
help your child learn and practice skills they need to be successful living at home.
Children in TFC receive therapy, therapeutic interventions in the home, and clinical
coordination of care. The average length of stay in TFC is 30-90 days.
Partial Hospital Program (PHP) - Children attend a highly
structured daytime program that includes school, therapy, and medication
management. Your child is home with you at night. The average length
of stay in PHP is 30 days.
Day Treatment - Day Treatment is similar to partial hospital in
that it includes a highly structured daytime program, school, and therapy, but is
designed for children who do not need daily medical care from a doctor. The
average length of stay in Day Treatment is 30 days.
Outpatient Therapy - Your child lives at home with you and
attends weekly individual or family therapy.
Behavior Management Services (BMS) - This service takes place
in your home. The BMS worker helps you and your child learn and practice
new skills that assist your child in managing their behavior.
Case Management Services (CM) - Case management takes place in
your home or over the phone. The CM helps you locate food, housing, school
services, childcare, therapy, etc.
