Your Child's Healthcare Team
Family: The family plays an important part in making hospital visits
and healing experiences positive for children. As family members, you are a key
part of the treatment team. Families are invited to share their needs, concerns and
knowledge of their child.
Doctor: When your child is admitted, an attending physician (Doctor) is
assigned to you. This doctor leads your child's medical care team. He/She works
with your referring physician and oversees all aspects of your child's care. Your doctor
will explain your child's condition and the appropriate treatment. The more you know
about your child's care, the more fully you can participate in your child's treatment.
If you need more information, please ask your child's nurse or health care provider.
Residents, Fellows, and Medical Students: Many attending physicians
(Doctors) are also faculty members who have residents, fellows and medical students working
closely with them.
Resident physicians are in the hospital 24 hours a day, assuring you of continual care when
your attending physician is not available. Resident physicians have completed their medical
training and are available to answer questions about your care.
Nursing and Support Staff: We are proud of our nursing and support care
team. They provide comprehensive care while you and your child are here. This care
is provided by nursing (Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses) and other staff (nursing
assistants, technicians, and clinical support) as needed. All of our staff is specially
trained.
Unit Director: Each unit is overseen by a Unit Director. If you have
compliments, questions, concerns or complaints regarding your child's care, ask your nurse to
contact the Unit Director.
Clinical Social Workers: Clinical Social Workers are available to discuss
your child's illness and the effect it may have on you and your family, as well as, to help
plan for your child's care when your child is discharged.
If you or a family member desires spiritual assistance, notify Clinical Social Work.
They can also assist with referrals to local hotels and other temporary lodging that may be
available. For assistance evenings or on weekends, please contact the hospital operator.
Child Life Specialists: The Child Life Specialists work with patients and
families to help them understand being in the hospital or coming for a clinic visit. Their
special training lets them help children find ways to express their fears about healthcare.
Nurse Discharge Coordinators: Discharge coordinators are available to assist
you in planning your child's return home.
Physical and Occupational Therapists: Our physical and occupational therapists
assist children with special needs to regain as much activity as possible and to become more
independent in their daily lives.
Speech and Hearing Therapists: These are therapists who focus on problems
related to hearing, understanding, feeding, swallowing, and speaking.
Respiratory Therapists: Respiratory therapists provide the technical support
to help your child breathe better.
Pastoral Counseling: Pastoral services are available for guidance and support.
The chapel is located on the first floor near University Hospital's main entrance and is
open 24 hours a day for prayer and meditation.
