UNMHSC Program in Sleep Medicine
Sleep Disorders Center
The Experts in Sleep Medicine

About Us

The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center Program in Sleep Medicine has the distinction of having a "first" and many "onlys" attached to it.  The sleep center was established in 1983 and was the first nationally accredited sleep disorders center in the State of New Mexico receiving accreditation in March of 1992 from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.  The criteria for accreditation is very stringent and to date, there is only one other accredited center in the entire state.  The Center is also accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations.

We provide comprehensive services to individuals having symptoms occurring during sleep or while awake due to unrefreshing sleep.  The Program combines a state-of-the-art outpatient sleep laboratory, inpatient sleep laboratory, sleep medicine clinic, and trained medical and technical staff dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of sleep/wake disorders in adults and children.

The center is staffed by sleep medicine experts from the fields of adult pulmonary medicine, geriatrics/internal medicine, neurology, and pediatric pulmonary medicine.  All are teaching faculty at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine.   Consultative support is provided by additional faculty in otolaryngology (ear-nose and throat surgery), psychiatry, cardiology and other specialties as needed.  In addition, we are the only sleep center in the state with a board certified pediatric sleep specialist. Because of that, we have the distinction of being "sleep for pediatrics" in New Mexico.

We are also very proud that we have the only inpatient sleep lab in the state and it is primarily devoted to pediatrics.  We study neonates, children on ventilators and children with other respiratory disorders that worsen during sleep.

Other than our recently graduated sleep tech student, all techs in our lab have passed their boards and are nationally registered Polysomnographic (sleep) techs.  They take responsibility for patient safety, quality of the studies, scoring studies, and training new techs in the field of sleep study acquisition.

The UNMHSC Program in Sleep Medicine has one of only 25 fellowship programs in Sleep Medicine that is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in the country.

The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center Program in Sleep Medicine is headquartered in the University Hospital Sleep Disorders Center, located in Sandia Medical Park at 1101 Medical Arts Ave NE Bldg. #2.  This newly renovated facility incorporates ample on-site parking immediately adjacent to the office.

There are over 100 different sleep disorder diagnoses.  You don't have to live with lack of energy or feeling tired all the time.  Speak with your provider and obtain a referral to our nationally accredited sleep center.  We can help!
