Nursing Education Unit-based Educators

Unit-based Educators (UBEs) function as a unit educator, master teacher, master preceptor and facilitate evidenced-based research in specialized areas of nursing. They utilize the expertise of a practitioner to incorporate nursing processes into the plan of care for a specialized group of patients. UBEs perform as a staff nurse and unit educator on a 50/50 basis. They ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies, procedures and guidelines. Patient care assignment may include Neonate, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric age groups.

UBES provide educational leadership, initiate unit-based strategies for developing clinical skills, develop patient care plans, consult with and serve as a clinical resource to the multidisciplinary team, utilize evidence-based research and current health care trends in the development of staff and patient education programs, collaborate with the Clinical Educators, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Specialty RNs and/or Unit Directors to plan and implement pertinent curricula.

In addition, the UBEs focus on improving patient safety by evaluating policies and procedures related to current national standards and guidelines, identifying and correcting environmental conditions that place patients at risk, by reporting potential or actual patient safety concerns, and encouraging patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatments or procedures that they do not understand or do not seem “right”.
