When can I work as an intern?
A preceptor must be identified on hire. The student must work only the preceptor’s schedule
for the first semester and be supervised by that preceptor throughout the program. The intern
may work other shifts than the preceptor after evaluation and approval by the preceptor and
faculty.
What can I do as an intern?
Provide nursing care under the direct supervision of an RN preceptor?
How do I apply for a position as an intern?
You may directly approach nurse managers of units you are interested in working or ask Mary
Blessing (mjblessing@salud.unm.edu) for assistance in identifying possible places to work.
What is the intern class like?
The class is one credits, or 16 hours over the semester. Seminars will concentrate on the
professional role, specifically professional communication and other topics of interest
identified by the interns. There are no tests or papers required. The grade comes entirely
from participation and meeting professional standards. Attendance is therefore required.
