About the ALS Center

The ALS Center at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center is the only facility in New Mexico to provide comprehensive care for ALS patients.  In a single appointment, patients are attended by skilled professionals in the following areas:

  • Neuromuscular Nurse - Oversees and monitors patient care both in and between clinic visits, coordinates research projects, and works with community agencies and insurance for your care.
  • Speech Therapy - Suggests appropriate exercises for swallowing; monitors need for and provides assistive equipment.
  • Occupational Therapy & Physical Therapy - Provides new approaches to managing tasks of daily life.
  • Nutrition - Evaluates diet for optimum health and energy.
  • Social Work - Assists with community and support services.
  • Respiratory Therapy - Maintains watch on pulmonary functions; adjustments to respiratory equipment.
  • Neurologist/Neuromuscular Specialist - Focuses on evidence-based care and treatment, with over 14 years of specialized training and experience in ALS.
