The University of New Mexico Hospital has been named as one of the top 15 Major Teaching Performance Improvement Hospitals by Solucient’s 100 Top Hospitals -- Performing Improvement Leaders.

This honorable ranking puts UNM Hospital in the same league as Johns Hopkins Hospital, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Washington Hospital Center and New York-Presbyterian Hospital, to name a few.

Through Solucient’s objective, statistical analyses of validated measures, it has been determined that the more successful management teams, such as UNM Hospital, have developed an effective organization-wide culture of performance improvement.  Additionally, these management teams have generated consistent organizational improvement across key areas of the hospital over a five-year period at a significantly faster rate than their peers.

Solucient determined the top 100 Performing Improvement Leader Hospitals by bringing together measures of clinical quality practice, operations and financial management, including mortality, complication, length of stay, expense per adjusted discharge, profitability and productivity rates.

The Solucient evaluation determined that UNM Hospital consistently ranked higher in various areas of hospital operations compared to other similar-sized hospitals.  UNM Hospital discharged patients nearly a day earlier, decreased the average expenses, increased profit margins significantly and lowered the mortality index.

The evaluation also found that UNM Hospital, as a leading Major Teaching Hospital, was able to improve its profit margins. Factors of this improvement include significant gains in UNM Hospital’s proportion of outpatient revenue, reduced average expense per adjusted discharge, decreased mortality indices and dramatically decreased patient complications.

UNM Hospital, a 384-bed acute, tertiary care facility, is the primary teaching hospital for the UNM School of Medicine and is the home of the highly regarded UNM Children's Hospital.
